History

During the 2014 World Cup, Manaus’s gleaming new landmarks—including a sleek cable-stayed bridge and a football stadium that hosted the opening and final matches—may have symbolized a city’s growing prosperity. But behind these monuments lie the same divisions that plagued the city from its beginnings.

The Casa do Albergado de Manaus is an essential component of Brazil’s penal system, providing shelter and social rehabilitation for inmates who have served their sentences. The institution has a rich history of providing support and assistance to those in need, and its programs are an important part of the process of reintegration into society.
